Foundation Models availability in mainland China

Hi,

Apple recently announced that Apple Intelligence will launch in mainland China with iOS 27.3.

Will the Foundation Models framework also become available to third-party apps in mainland China? If so, will it use the new iOS 27 Apple Foundation Model or an older version? Will the new capabilities and Private Cloud Compute also be supported?

Thanks!

Thanks for asking. Apple folks can't comment future plans, but the Foundation Models framework is there with the system, and so you can SystemLanguageModel.availability and PrivateCloudComputeLanguageModel.availability to check if the models are available on a device shipped in the region.

Developers can also use the framework to work with models via the LanguageModel protocol, like ChatCompletionsLanguageModel mentioned here.

One more question: If the Foundation Models framework becomes available in mainland China, does anyone know which model it will use? Will it be the standard Apple Foundation Model (and which generation), a China-specific Apple model, or Alibaba’s Qwen?
